Selection round – unedited recording:
Camille Saint-Saëns: Sonata for Bassoon and Piano, Op. 168

1st round:
1. J. S. Bach: Suite No. 3 in C major, BWV 1009 (selection)
2. Henri Dutilleux: Sarabande et Cortège

2nd round:
1. Composition commissioned by the Prague Spring IMC 2009 (composed by Juraj Filas)
2. Camille Saint-Saëns: Sonata for Bassoon and piano, Op. 168
3. Candidates will choose one of the following compositions:

Karlheinz Stockhausen: In Freundschaft
E. V. Denisov: Sonata for Bassoon Solo
Isang Yun: Monolog for Bassoon
Marcel Bitsch: Concertino

Piano accompaniment
Candidates may bring their own piano accompanists to the competition, who will however have to meet their own travel expenses and accommodation costs. The candidates who will not bring their own pianist to the competition may ask in the application form to be provided with an official accompanist.

Pianos will be tuned to 442 Hz.

3. round – final in cooperation with Prague Chamber Orchestra conducted by Ondřej Vrabec
1. J. N. Hummel: Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra in F major - to be played from memory
2. Jean Françaix: Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra

General Provisions

The 61st Prague Spring International Music Competition, a member of the Geneva-based World Federation of International Music Competitions, will be held in Prague between 7-15 May, 2009, in the following categories:
FLUTE and BASSOON.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
The competition is open to musicians of all nationalities who meet the following conditions:
a) Age limit: participants must be under the age of 30 (i.e. born on or after 7 May, 1979);
b) The participants have not previously won 1st prize in the respective category in the Prague Spring International Music Competition.

APPLICATION
Those wishing to take part in the competition should complete the application form and send it to:

The applicants should enclose the following:
a) high quality, non-edited recording (CD or minidisc) of the compositions set out in the “Repertoire” section here below. The recording must be marked with a password. Please, mark the recording only with a password which you also enter in the application form. The quality of the recording must be of a professional standard. The selection of candidates who may participate in the Prague Spring competition will be based solely on the recording and will be anonymous. A confirmation written by a teacher or another authority in the arts (e.g. sound director) guaranteeing the given authenticity of the recording, should be also enclosed. Failure in following the given repertoire will result in disqualification of the candidate from the competition.

b) copy of the candidate’s birth certificate

c) photograph (portrait) suitable for reproduction, clearly marked with the candidate’s name
d) confirmation of payment of administration fee of
€ 25 (covering registration and selection round costs) transferred to the following bank account with Raiffeisen Bank, Narodni str. 9., Praha 1: 1031014100/5500. IBAN: CZ10 5500 0000 0010 3101 4100, B.I.C. RZBCCZPP, name of the account is “Prazske jaro” (those interested in paying in CZK, please contact the office to obtain a different account number)

The above enclosures will not be returned.

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS
IS 15 DECEMBER 2008
(Applications posted after this date will not be accepted)

The candidates will be notified by 15 February 2009, whether or not their application has been accepted.
Those accepted will send entry fee of € 75 by 31 March 2009 at the latest. The entry fee is not refundable.

ACCOMMODATION
Candidates will meet the travel and accommodation expenses themselves for the course of the 1st round of the competition. Commencing with the 2nd round, accommodation in a hotel selected by the organiser will be covered for the period of the candidates’ active participation in the competition. The prize-winners’ accommodation costs will be met until the day of the prize-giving ceremony. Should the candidate arrange other accommodation than that arranged by the organiser, the Prague Spring will be unable to meet such costs.
